Na een overheerlijk nacht in een hemels bed waren we rond een uur of 7 uit bed. Een wat langzame ochtend met een lekkere douche en ontbijt aan zee.

Opvallend is dat heel Auckland ‘s-ochtends sportief bezig is. Mensen zwommen in de zee, waren aan het surfen of SUP’en of kwamen wandelend of hardlopend langs tijdens ons ontbijtje. Je zou je haast schuldig gaan voelen.

Na het ontbijt en wat kopjes koffie en thee vertrokken we verder richting het noorden. Omdat het rijden in de camper niet alleen het vervoermiddel is maar een groot onderdeel van de vakantie besloten we niet over de tolweg te gaan maar de Ocean Route te kiezen. Hierdoor omzeilden we de tolweg (niet dat dat kostentechnisch nodig was aangezien de prijs voor een vrachtwagen 4.40 nzd is).

Een prachtige route langs het water en door de bossen. Heuveltje op, heuveltje af, slingerbochtje rechtsom, slingerbochtje linksom.

We besloten halverwege bij een tankstation te stoppen. Niet met het mooiste uitzicht, maar wel met lekkere koffie.

Na bijna 5 uur te hebben gereden stopten we kort aan het strand bij het begin van Bay of Islands. De naam zegt het al…

We slapen vannacht in Paihia, onderdeel van de Bay of Islands. John is op camping Waitangi weer aan het water geparkeerd en het is hier ontzettend mooi.

Vanaf de stoepjes die langs het strand lopen kijk je niet alleen prachtig over het water uit maar ook op de (onbewoonde) eilandjes die er liggen en naar het schiereiland aan de overkant.

Tijdens onze wandeling bleek er aan de overkant een boot in vuur en vlam te staan. Een indrukwekkend gezicht om langs de bewolkte lucht de zwarte wolken van de brand te zien. We liepen richting de haven van Paihia en uiteindelijk ploften we in de winkelstraat neer bij de plaatselijke ‘rib shack’. Ik zelf koos voor de Rib Taster. Gezien de prijs en de omschrijving ging ik er vanuit dat ik een halve portie zou krijgen...

Het eten smaakte behoorlijk goed. Ondertussen hebben we de planning van de aankomende maand nog eens goed bekeken. Na het eten zijn we via het strand terug gewandeld naar de camping en hebben we nog gezellig een wijntje gedronken.

Inmiddels liggen we al weer in bed, dus ga ook ik zo slapen. Het weer is tot nu toe overigens prima. Het was vandaag 18 graden en licht bewolkt. De wind mag wat mij betreft nog wel wat meer gaan liggen want op een tafel wat papieren uitstallen is er niet bij.

Vanaf morgen wordt de kans op regen groter, jammer maar helaas. We rijden morgenochtend vroeg naar het meest noordelijke puntje en duimen dat het droog is als we daar aankomen…

After a blissful night in a heavenly bed, we were up around 7 o'clock. A leisurely morning with a lovely shower and breakfast by the sea.

What stands out is that all of Auckland is sporting activity in the morning. People were swimming in the sea, surfing or SUP'ing, or jogging and walking past us during breakfast. You'd almost feel guilty.

After breakfast and a few cups of coffee and tea, we headed north. Since driving the camper is not just our means of transport but a major part of the holiday, we decided to skip the toll road and take the Ocean Route instead. This way we avoided the motorway (not that we needed to for cost reasons, since the toll for a campervan is only 4.40 NZD).

A beautiful route along the water and through the forests. Up one hill, down another, a winding curve to the right, a winding curve to the left.

We decided to stop halfway at a petrol station. Not the most scenic spot, but with decent coffee.

After almost 5 hours of driving, we stopped briefly at the beach at the beginning of Bay of Islands. The name says it all…

Tonight we're sleeping in Paihia, part of the Bay of Islands. John is parked on the Waitangi campsite right on the water, and it's absolutely stunning here.

From the pathways that run along the beach, you not only have a beautiful view over the water but also of the (uninhabited) little islands that are scattered about and the peninsula across the way.

During our walk, it turned out that a boat on the other side was on fire. An impressive sight to see the black plumes of smoke rising against the cloudy sky. We walked towards Paihia harbour and eventually ended up collapsing in the shopping street at the local rib shack. I chose the Rib Taster for myself. Given the price and the description, I assumed I'd get a half portion…

The food tasted quite good. Meanwhile, we've taken another good look at our plans for the coming month. After eating, we walked back to the campsite via the beach and enjoyed a glass of wine together.

By now we're already back in bed, so I'll be off to sleep soon. The weather has been fine so far. It was 18 degrees today and lightly cloudy. The wind could calm down a bit as far as I'm concerned—leaving papers out on a table isn't an option.

From tomorrow onwards, the chance of rain increases, unfortunately. We're driving early in the morning to the most northern point and hoping it will be dry when we arrive…
